Sidecar Report - From Chris Helm
Report from Round 2 of the Kamar British Sidecarcross Championship.
In round 2 of the Kamar British Sidecarcross Championship the wildcard team from Holland, Wilfred van Werven / Eli Piccard showed all the British teams how it should be done, winning all three races. With the circuit very sticky after heavy rain, it was difficult to post a fast lap in timed training because the track was so soft off the racing line. This did not deter v. Werven / Piccard who on their first quick lap headed the field by just over 8 seconds. Their time was good enough to keep them at the top but by the end of the session Stuart Brown / Luke Peters had closed to within 1½ seconds of their time.
The first race was led by Brown from van Werven with Colin Philpott / Ian Beavis in third but by midway through lap 2 v. Werven took the lead. Although Brown was in second place he was not going to let v. Werven get away and he kept him in sight for the whole race. Because the track was still very sticky off the racing line the top 6 positions did not change until the last two laps when the Irish team of Geoff Ingram / Rob Harron lost two places.
In race two v. Werven took the holeshot from Andy & Lionel Eastman with Philpott third and Brown back in 5th. By the end of lap 3 Brown was up to second and Philpott was right on the back wheel of Eastman. For the next 5 laps Philpott tried all he knew to pass Eastman but he could only manage to draw level, never quite managing to make the pass. On the ninth lap, round a sweeping left hand bend, the two bikes touched and the Eastmans were launched into the air above their somersaulting outfit. When they hit the ground neither driver nor passenger moved so the race was red flagged. Happily I can report that neither of them was too badly hurt and Andy was able to ride in race 3 with a stand in passenger.
Leg 3 was led by Philpott from v. Werven with Brown back in 6th place. By the end of lap 2 v. Werven was in the lead and Brown was now up to 3rd but a long way behind Philpott. The Dutchman was comfortably in front but Philpott was only being caught very slowly by Brown and looked as if he was safe in 2nd. Once the leaders started to lap the tail-enders things changed and for the last few laps Brown was right with Philpott but try as he might he could not get past and finally had to settle for 3rd. Brown now leads the championship by 13 points from Philpott with the Eastmans in third place.
